Unboxing & Storing your Cakes

Chevron

How are my cakes packaged and kept cool?

Chevron

Your cakes will be securely delivered in recyclable cardboard boxes with frozen gel-packs and our fully recyclable Wool-cool packaging.

How should I store my delivery?

Chevron

Unless you are planning to use your cakes straightaway, you should put them into the freezer as soon as possible.

Should I unwrap my cakes before storing them?

Chevron

No. Keep your cakes in their trays and boxes with their protective cellophane sleeve to keep them fresh and to ensure optimal storage.

Where can I find important batch, ingredients, allergen and Use-By information?

Chevron

Each cake box is labelled with information such as ingredients, allergens, batch number and best before  date. The boxes are labelled on the sides and lids, so that the information is visible at a glance, no matter how you choose to stack them. It’s important to store your cakes and bakes in their boxes so you don’t lose this information.

What should I do with my packaging?

Chevron

The contents of the frozen ice packs can be re-used or disposed of down the sink and outer packaging can be put into your normal waste collection. Our innovative, natural and sustainable Wool-cool insulation packs are fully biodegradable, compostable, recyclable and reusable. Find out more about how to dispose of, or reuse, your Wool-pack insulation here.

Do you take the packaging away?

Chevron

We’re working on a packaging-return policy and process for our Wool-cool insulation. In the meantime, please refer to the previous question on how to dispose of our packaging responsibly.

Defrosting your cakes

Chevron

How long does it take to defrost my cakes?

Chevron

Individual portions of traybakes, traycakes and round cakes will defrost in about an hour and be ready to display and sell. Whole, unportioned round cakes will take between 2 and 4 hours to defrost fully.

About our Pre-portioned Traycakes & Bakes

Chevron

Why are the cakes available pre-portioned?

Chevron

The benefits of pre-portioned cakes and bakes is that you only have to defrost what you need, when you need it. The rest can be returned to the freezer in in their trays and boxes, retaining the cellophane to ensure the product stays in the best possible condition and minimise waste.

When should I separate the portions?

Chevron

It’s easiest to separate the portions whilst they are still frozen.

How do I best separate the portions?

Chevron

For best results it’s advisable to tear open the cake or bake tray so that you can separate each portion whilst frozen. You may want to run a pallet knife under the bakes to ensure that they separate from the tray.

About our Whole Round Cakes

Chevron

When can I slice my cakes?

Chevron

It is best to cut your cakes into slices when they have been defrosted.

When should I defrost my cakes?

Chevron

If you plan to use a whole cake the following day, it’s advisable to defrost the cake overnight.

How long does it take to defrost?

Chevron

A whole round cake can take between 2 and 4 hours to fully defrost.

Can I defrost just part of the cake?

Chevron

If you wish to defrost your cakes a slice at a time we would recommend buying the pre-sliced option.

Looking After your Cakes

Chevron

My daily covers are unpredictable. What if I need more or less cake than expected?

Chevron

By delivering cakes to you frozen you have the opportunity to defrost just the amount you need for your display. You can always top up your display throughout the day – a slice of traybake or traycake will only take around an hour to defrost. If it looks like you’re running out, you can order before 12:00 for next-day delivery, Monday to Saturday.

Take a look at our product care guide here.

Once defrosted how should I store my cakes?

Chevron

Your cakes should be displayed at room temperature, ideally under a cake dome or in a display cabinet. This will ensure that your cakes remain fresh and retain optimum moisture content. This should give you a 4-5 day shelf life for your cakes.

What if I need to keep defrosted cake overnight?

Chevron

If you need to keep your cakes overnight, we recommend covering and storing your defrosted cakes and bakes in a cool dry place overnight, to keep them fresh and ensure optimal shelf life.

About our ‘Very Low Gluten’ Cakes

Chevron

Why are some of your cakes labelled ‘Very Low Gluten’, rather than ‘Gluten-free’?

Chevron

Many of our products are made with ingredients that are gluten-free. While we offer gluten-free options, we are not a gluten-free bakery. We take extreme care to avoid cross-contamination and have robust processes in place to minimise this risk. However, cross-contamination could occur and we are unable to guarantee that any item can be completely free of allergens. We therefore mark these products as ‘Very Low Gluten’ (VLG) rather than Gluten-free.

How can you be sure of where all your ingredients have come from?

Chevron

We use an industry-leading, end-to-end, ingredients traceability solution that enables us to track every ingredient from delivery, though production and ultimately to our end customer. This gives us absolute confidence that we have full control over our recipes and the ingredients used in each product.

About our Vegan Cakes

Chevron

I’m concerned that vegan cakes are often not as enjoyable as non-vegan. I have a lot of vegan customers. Are your vegan cakes as good a product as your non-vegan?

Chevron

We pride ourselves on bringing our customers the best range of cakes available, regardless of their dietary choices or allergen requirements. A lot of our cakes, traycakes and traybakes are vegan and our range of vegan cakes and bakes are among the most popular options from the entire range!

Why frozen?

Chevron

Why have you chosen to freeze handmade cakes? Won’t it affect the quality?

Chevron

We’ve chosen to freeze our cakes for a number of reasons. Firstly, a frozen cake retains the full flavour and texture of a fresh cake. This allows us to ship the cakes nationally throughout the UK without risk of any damage to them. We use a process called blast freezing, which means they are delivered to you as fresh as if they were just baked. Your cakes can be kept frozen for at least 6 months, so you get incredible flexibility around what and when you use them.

Why Pre-portion?

Chevron

Why have you pre-portioned some of your cakes?

Chevron

By pre-portioning the cakes, you can defrost just the amount you need for your display. As it only takes an hour to defrost each portion, you can top up your display during the day as required. This helps keep your cake fresher for longer and reduces the amount of any potential wastage.

Chevron
